Get to know Golden Malicious...

What is the meaning behind your skater name?
Golden Malicious is a riff on Golden Delicious (like the apple). My last name is Silver and I liked the idea of your roller derby name being an alter ego, so thus the gold theme (I go by Goldie for short!).
What was your athletic background prior to playing roller derby?
I played soccer most of my life, and played broomball in college. I always loved the intensity of being in a contact sport and really enjoy being part of a team. Fun fact: I also did Jazzercise while living in Charlottesville.
Is there a song that gets you pumped up before a bout?
Oof, I have a whoooollle playlist. Some good classics are Whoomp (there it is) by Tag Team, Hand in My Pocket by Alanis Morisette, and Start Wearing Purple by Gogol Bordello.
What aspect of derby do you enjoy the most?
Ah! It's so hard to choose. I love how strong it makes me feel, on the worst days, when I'm feeling bad about my body, I remind myself how strong I am because of derby. I also love the camaraderie that derby brings. Derby is one of the most welcoming places to be and no matter what is going on you can always expect to be met with friendly people.
How did you get started in your roller derby career?
I started in Charlottesville in 2017. Back in high school, probably circa 2008, I went to a skating pop-up at an abandoned warehouse, and there happened to be a bunch of really cool derby girls skating around. I was inspired, but never thought I'd be able to get involved in something that cool. Years later, I was invited to work a derby event as the charity in Charlottesville; I immediately took my opportunity and asked "how can I join?" So two months later, I went to their new skater boot camp, and the rest is history.
