How long have you been skating?
About 9 months on derby skates, but on ice and roller blades since I was a little kid 🙂
What is your favorite derby moment?
My first bout at the end of season 10 was wonderful! And I loved jamming for the first time at Black and Blue 11.
What is your pre-bout routine? Any rituals?
Meh not really. I’ll listen to some music in the car on the way there, do a little stretching before getting my gear on, but honestly just being there is enough to psych me up for the bout:)
What does your derby name mean?
It’s a play on “Chewbacca” from Star Wars! 🙂 I wanted a Star Wars themed name that would sound good shortened (Chewie) and also be something that people would recognize. Plus Chewbacca is awesome.
I also imagined one day being able to jam and coming around a turn to a crowd screaming “PUNCH IT, CHEWIE!” ….and that just made my nerdy little heart soar.
How important is derby in your life?
It has rapidly become one of the most important things in my life. I knew it would be fun and that I might make a few new friends, but it has become so much more than that. I feel so much better about myself as a person and as an athlete, physically and mentally, than I did even 1 year ago. Part of that is personal, but part of that is also being surrounded by wonderful, supportive, hard working skaters and volunteers who show up every day on and off the track to make this league work. It’s amazing. When I joined I never imagined falling for it the way I have, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
What advice would you give to someone looking to begin their roller derby career?
Do it! The training program is so great, and it doesn’t matter if you have years of skating experience or less than five minutes-there is a place for everyone. And if you need a skating buddy, I’m always here and ready to roll! 🙂
Anything else we should know about you?
I collect cereal themed pajama pants and I pronounce Arkansas the way it looks: ArkanSAS. Not really super relevant, but a fun fact 😛
