BRRD is always looking to share our love of derby with some Fresh Meat! We are currently using an open enrollment format for recruiting, which means that new skaters (“Fresh Meat”) can join at any time.

If you’re interested in getting involved, the first step is to watch a BRRD league practice. This gives potential skaters an opportunity to watch us in action and see what happens at a typical practice session. “See-A-Practice” events are scheduled for specific days, which are listed on our Facebook page.

After attending a “See-A-Practice,” new skaters can start skating with the league! The first on-skates practice a new skater attends marks the beginning of their Fresh Meat tryout period. After 12 weeks, the Fresh Meat period ends and qualifying skaters become full members of the league.

During this time period, Fresh Meat can attend regular league practices and basic skills sessions. Basic skills sessions are practices that focus on specific sections of the WFTDA Minimum Skills Requirements (PDF): basic skating skills, recovery tactics, balance and agility, and skating with others. Fresh Meat will begin as non-contact skaters and graduate to partial contact and full contact as they develop and master the required skills. Skaters are not required to complete the Minimum Skills Requirements during the tryout period, but they cannot participate in scrimmages or bouts until they have done so.
