BRRG at last year's Race for the Cure.

This year, the Burning River Roller Girls will be donating to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northeast Ohio through our annual Black & Blue charity bout.

It’s easy to just think of cutesy pink merchandise and witty slogans about breasts when talking about fundraisers for breast cancer research. So we wanted to let you know this organization is about so much more than little ribbons.

So who is Susan G. Komen?

From the Susan G. Komen for the Cure website:
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and commitment to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer.

Though Susan lost her battle with the disease, her legacy lives on through the work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the organization Nancy started in her honor. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1.9 billion since its inception in 1982. Komen’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

About the Northeast Ohio affiliate

In March 2010, Komen Northeast Ohio was honored as the Affiliate of the Year by the national organization in recognition of the effective stewardship of donor funds and impact in the community.  Komen Northeast Ohio serves 22 counties in Northeast Ohio by funding breast cancer education, screening and survivor support programs. Seventy-five percent of the funds received remain here in Northeast Ohio and the remaining 25 percent helps fund national research to discover the causes of breast cancer and ultimately its cures.

BRRG is excited to work with this organization to carry on Susan’s legacy not only at the upcoming Black & Blue, but also at the Race for the Cure in September. More details on that to come!

Tickets are on sale now for Black & Blue 6 through the Wolstein Center box office.  A portion of every ticket sale will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northeast Ohio!  Help us support this great organization.
